What is a Mesh Topology Network?

Describes a mesh topology network with an example

  • In a mesh topology, every node in the network has individual connectivity with every other node in the network.
  • Since the number of connections are more, a mesh network is typically used mainly in backbone networks, to connect the backbone Routers/Switches together.

The diagram below gives a sample mesh topology network

What is a Tree Topology Network?

Describes a tree topology network with an example

  • A Tree topology network, as the name suggests, resembles a tree like  structure.
  • It is an extension of the star topology. A tree topology is nothing but a number of star topology networks connected in a hierarchical structure, with multiple levels.

A sample tree topology network is given in the diagram below:

A Tree Topology network

  • In this diagram, you can see 3 star networks at the lowest level, with another central device at the next level, connecting these 3 star topology networks together. Each of the lower level networks could typically belong to individual departments of an organization/university, with the next level central device serving for inter department communication.
  • Tree topologies are common in Enterprises, Campuses, Universities etc.
